Sunday night’s MTV VMA Awards was definitively filled with exciting, eye-catching, and shocking moments. But nobody had prepared the audience for what Kanye West had to say. He announced that he is planning to run for president in 2020. “It’s not about me. It’s about ideas. New ideas. People with ideas. People who believe in truth.”
To this point, the question most of us are asking is: Was he being serious? Could he actually make it to the West Wing?
West was awarded with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, presented by Taylor Swift. During his ten-minute acceptance speech, Kanye recollected the events of 2009 where he took the microphone and openly protested Taylor Swift´s award for best female video.
“I think if I had to do it all again, what would I have done?” West said. “Would I have worn a leather shirt? Would I have drank a half a bottle of Hennessy and given the rest to the crowd?” He then reflected on how different it would have been if he had a daughter at the time. He never really conclusively answered any of his own questions, though.
It is not really that clear how serious he was about running for president. As a matter of fact, he talked about how the audience was probably wondering if he had smoked something before going up on stage. “Did he smoke something before he came out here? The answer is ‘Yes, I rolled up a little something. I knocked the edge off.'”
When almost ending his speech Kanye dropped it, "And yes, as you probably could've guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for President."
Now, the internet is flooded with videos and memes about what it would be like to have rapper Kanye West as president.
